See Austin

As you wander around Austin, you just might spot a bumper sticker that says “Keep Austin Weird.” Huh? This vibrant college town is known for its bats, live music and individuality. That individuality has been coming through for years in the form of an informal “movement” to Keep Austin Weird. (Although, in a blow against weirdness and a win for blatant commercialism, a company has received a copyright for the phrase, but that’s another story.)

As you stand on the patio of the Hyatt Regency Austin, look to your right. That’s the Congress Avenue Bridge, Austin’s famous bat bridge. In the spring, nearly a million Mexican free-tail bats roost under this bridge. You can’t see them, but you can hear them and you certainly can smell them. By the end of the summer, as the sun is setting, visitors can watch more than 1.5 million bats leave their colony and take to the skies in search of food. It’s quite a sight! But unfortunately, by January, the bats will have returned to Mexico for the winter. You can still read about the bats by visiting the educational displays at the base of the bridge.

The Hyatt sits on the shore of Town Lake, which is actually a dammed up section of the Colorado River. More than 10 miles of trails loop around the lake. Put on your walking shoes and get a map from the concierge at the hotel. Even just a short walk on the trail will take you to the statue of Austin blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan exemplified Austin’s live music scene. After your walk around Town Lake or visit to the bat bridge, head down to Sixth Street or the Warehouse District for some good food and great music. Blues. Country. Rock. Tejano. Cabaret. Acoustic. If you enjoy live music, Austin won’t disappoint. The city is known as the live music capital of the world, and for good reason. It has more live music venues per capita than cities such as Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City. The city embraces its image. Even ticketed passengers at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport can watch live music performances daily.

If you get hungry after all of your wandering, head over to Whole Foods Market on the corner of Sixth and Lamar. It’s just over a mile away by foot. If you’ve never been to a Whole Foods Market, this is your chance to see the company’s landmark store. If you retail, it’s definitely worth a look.
